Lake Macquarie is bursting at the seams with artists and creatives always eager for new opportunities to expand and develop their creative practice.

A list of current opportunities can be found below. 

Lake Art Prize 2022

Applications are now open for the Lake Art Prize 2022. The theme for the prize is ‘The Vessel: contained within and moving between’.

In working with the theme, artists are invited to explore literal or lateral translations of the vessel, exploring the notions of, but not limited to the power to hold, containment, passage, memory as well as the vessel in relation to life, water and place.

The Lake Art Prize 2022 has a $25,000 acquisitive prize pool to acquire works for the MAC yapang collection. The finalist exhibition will be on view at MAC yapang from 24 September - 11 December 2022.

Expressions of Interest – Open Studios November 2022

Over Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 November 2022, Lake Macquarie City Council invites local artists and makers to open their studio doors and welcome the general public inside for a behind the scenes look; giving art lovers the chance to meet artists, learn about the creative process and purchase unique artworks to take home.

Applications are open now for participation in the November 2022 Open Studios event. If you have any questions about the event please contact our team at openstudios@lakemac.nsw.gov.au

The deadline to submit your Expression of Interest is 5PM AEST Thursday 15 September 2022. Applications must be submitted online via Smartygrants.


Expressions of Interest - 2022 Big Draw Festival: Lake Macquarie Workshop Tutors

Lake Macquarie City Council are seeking artists to create workshops that explore this year’s The Big Draw festival theme: “Come Back To Colour”.

Workshop events will be held as part of the festival at MAP mima, Museum of Art and Culture yapang, the Wangi Creative Hub and on the Lake’s edge at Warners Bay Foreshore. If you have a creative workshop idea we would love to hear from you.

Expressions of interest from tutors must be received by 5PM Monday 29 August 2022.

One Act Play: Script entries

Get your act together - the Lake Macquarie One Act Play Festival is open for submissions!

The new theatre competition will showcase short, sharp and exhilarating one-act plays from Lake Macquarie and beyond. 

We're on the lookout for 10-20 minute scripts that will be developed with the help of a producer. Entries are open to ages 10 years and up, and inclusive to both emerging and well versed playwrights and performers.

Sugar Valley Library Museum: Creative Heritage Outdoor Sculpture

Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking design proposals for a permanent outdoor sculpture out the front of the Sugar Valley Library Museum, Kirantakamyari at Cameron Park.

Council is offering one commission with a total budget of $25,000 (plus GST) to combine existing heritage metal objects that have been reclassified to be made available for a creative sculptural form.

Windale Hub: Creative Inclusions

Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking proposals for a series of creative treatments to be included as part of the construction of the Windale Hub, Bilyabayi.

The project seeks to acknowledge, strengthen and celebrate the Windale community’s relationship with the site as their civic lounge room; a place to gather, learn, connect and celebrate.

The commissions, whilst artist-led, should be community focused and engage community members in the making of the work.

Council is offering three commissions for the design, fabrication and installation of a creative treatment:

a) Suspended sculpture for main open public space - $50,000 plus GST
b) Outdoor artwork - $20,000 plus GST
c) Children’s area creative treatment $4,000 plus GST

These three commissions will support a series of community and creative projects, coordinated by Council, that will also be incorporated within the building.

yapang Arts Placements - Museum of Art and Culture, yapang

The yapang Arts Placement is a pathway for First Nations creatives into the arts.

Lake Macquarie City Council offers support for curatorial projects, public programs, arts education, digital arts, documentation, design and marketing. Your placement can focus on an area of interest or enable you to explore various aspects of arts.

Applications are currently open on a rolling basis.

The Museum aims to provide a high quality and balanced program. The Museum of Art and Culture, yapang is committed to supporting First Nations and Hunter-based artists and fosters insightful contemporary art.

Launchpad @ Lake Mac Libraries

Launchpad is an engaging exhibition program for local creatives to showcase their works to the community. 

The exhibition is held across four Lake Mac Libraries branches - Belmont, Toronto, Charlestown, and Swansea, providing a space for students, emerging artists and community art groups to present their works for public viewing.

Applications will be considered by Launchpad @Lake Mac Libraries that best reflect the objectives of the program.
