The Australian Army Band

The Australian Army Band, Newcastle, was founded in 1861, as the Volunteer Rifles Band, serving the Newcastle and Hunter regions. Over the decades it has become a significant musical and ceremonial unit within the Australian Defence Force.

Throughout its history, the Band has undergone numerous transformations, both in name and structure, reflecting broader changes within the military and society. During World War I and World War II, the band played a crucial role in boosting morale both on the home front and in theatres of war, performing at military camps, hospitals, and during troop send-offs and homecomings.

In 1968, the Band was officially renamed the Australian Army Band Newcastle. This marked a new era of professionalism and expanded its capabilities, allowing it to support a wider array of military and civilian events. The Band’s repertoire ranges from traditional military marches and classical compositions to contemporary and popular music, showcasing its versatility.

The Band is composed of highly skilled musicians who are also trained soldiers, embodying the dual roles of performers and servicemen and women. They are frequently called upon for ceremonial duties, including Anzac Day services, military parades, and official functions, both domestically and internationally. Their performances aim to foster community spirit, enhance military traditions, and strengthen the bonds between the Australian Army and the public.

In addition to their ceremonial duties, the Band engages in community outreach, conducting educational workshops, and performing at charity events, schools, and local festivals. These activities underscore the band’s commitment to contributing positively to the community and supporting Australian cultural life.
