Dobell Festival Lanterns

Next date: Saturday, 01 June 2024 | 12:00 AM to Sunday, 30 June 2024 | 11:59 PM

Lanterns at MAC yapang as part of the Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival

Solar-powered lanterns on display at the Dobell Festival were created by The Beautiful and Useful Studio. Maurice Goldberg and Michael Aberline from The Beautiful and Useful Studio worked with the local community to create these colourful lanterns that illuminate key festival venues.

They look great at Museum of Art and Culture, yapang (MAC yapang) and can also be seen at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima (MAP mima) in Speers Point Park, Dobell House, Wangi Creative Hub & Library and Warners Bay Theatre, baramayiba.

Aberline designed the lanterns, combining imagery produced by local participants during a Creative Flow Workshop at MAC yapang in 2022. During the workshop, Goldberg encouraged participants to shake loose their critical judgment and 'dance' into expressive mark marking.

Goldberg and Aberline are best known for their huge and colourful inflatable installations that featured at MAP mima as part of the Press Play festival, and have wowed audiences all around Australia and internationally, including in New York, London and Copenhagen.
