MAP mima workshops and residencies
MAP mima is a place for experimentation, skill building and creation. Each year we offer workshops, residencies and commission artworks.
MAP mima Artist Residency
Residencies at MAP mima provide an opportunity for artists to develop and present new work.
Artists in Residence focus on creating video work for The Cube at MAP mima – a four-metre-tall and 36-metre-long 360-degree wrap around digital canvas, powered by eight projectors using Resolume mapping software. They are also encouraged and supported to create works for other spaces within MAP mima, including The Node, a video projection space; The North Wall, which features a six-channel responsive soundscape; and the Discovery Ports, a series of illuminated niches in the walls of the foyer for display of small works.
Artists present the works created as part of the residency or deliver workshop projects with the public.

MAP mima Commissions
Each year MAP mima commission new artwork for the 360-degree projection space through an open call. Proposed projects can utilise the entire venue or be screened based works.

360 Projection Masterclass
The MAP mima Masterclass is a specialised program designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to install and manage projections within the projection cube at MAP mima. This immersive training focuses on four key software tools: Resolume, Blender, After Effects, and TouchDesigner, each critical for creating and executing stunning visual installations.
For each Masterclass, three local artists and three artists from around Australia are supported to develop their practices and create new digital works.
November 2024 Masterclass
Expressions of Interest are now open for the five-day intensive workshop at MAP mima from 11-15 November.
Two spots remain in the 2024 Masterclass. One is reserved for a local resident or someone with strong local ties, able to provide their own accommodation in the area. The second spot is for someone who needs to travel to Lake Macquarie to participate. We have space available at the Lake House to accommodate a participant from outside the area.
Artists should have experience producing moving imagery and with digital image manipulation.

The Virtual Landscape – Augmented Reality
The Virtual Landscape enables you to explore digital artworks that are tethered to five locations around the building. Search for QR codes around MAP mima to find artworks created through a series of workshops and projects in collaboration with VEARA.

MAP mima callout for bands and DJs
MAP mima is seeking expressions of interest from local musicians, bands, and DJs to get involved in our programs and events.

These programs have been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body and is supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
