Having fallen in love with wheel throwing in her late twenties, after many years dabbling on and off while life and a medical career got busy, Ameeta is now immersed in ceramics. What better way to forge connections with the earth and your own hands and heart, and to share with others that appreciation of the natural, handmade and slow. A sunny home studio that has wheels, kiln and space allows for creativity and learning, as well as calmness and a meditative escape. Inspired by the beauty and randomness of the natural world and the human form, her practice includes stoneware and porcelain wheel thrown and altered forms. From the functional and affordable cups bowls, mugs, plates to unique art pieces there is a clear evolution of skill and style. Embracing originality while acknowledging and learning from the rich deep history of ceramics in human cultures, mastering technical throwing skills and exploring different surfaces are her current goals. The name for the studio comes from the Pippal Tree (Bodhi tree) - a venerated tree in Buddhism and Hinduism whose beautiful leaves are used for artwork, and all parts for medicinal uses. Her Indian heritage, international travels and gardening provide inspiration and depth to a life well lived.
Ameeta uses the potter wheel to throw forms, and plays with altering the shapes or surfaces. The clays are stoneware or porcelain, glazed with simple earthy glazes and fired to 1220 - 1280 degrees Celsius in a solar powered electric kiln. When opportunity arises alternative firing with pit firing, Raku and Obvara create gorgeous natural finishes.
