Sean Bell
Sean Thomas Bell has worked with councils and local business owners within the Hunter Region, creating murals within Newcastle at cafes, to public art pieces in Port Stephens to help with community engagement.
It all kicked off back in around 2015 when Sean was approached to work on the illustrations for the giant interactive headphones sculpture based in the heart of Newcastle on Darby Street. Since then, Sean has worked on two public art pieces for Port Stephens Council, one being a large scale mural in Nelson Bay on the side of the visitor information centre and the other one was painting a range of boards on the side of an outdoor seating area in Shoal Bay. In early 2021, he completed two smaller scale murals for popular cafes, The Umbrian, on King St and Core Espresso on Darby Street. Since 2018 Sean has been in two group shows, one being a finalist in the 2020 Emerging Newcastle Art Prize with NAS. In late 2019, Sean put on his own solo exhibition within a barbershop in Newcastle. Bell’s work has been described as colourful and easy on the eye, with playful cut-out shapes that he uses throughout his work. His style is constantly being referred to as similar to famous Australian artist
John Coburn's.
With all Sean’s abstract work, he wants the audience to use their own imagination to come up with their own interpretation of what they see within the art. Bell's artwork heavily comes back to his graphic design roots which influences his visual direction. What may look chaotic and wild is actually carefully planned and placed. Making sure there is a fine balance between shapes and the negative space throughout the pieces of art, which are primarily created by using acrylic paint on either canvas or timber board.
