Cathy Lane

Cathy Lane is a practicing visual artist living at the top of Lake Macquarie, NSW Australia. Over the years she has had 4 solo art exhibitions (in hired premises) and has been in many group exhibitions. In the past she worked as an illustrator, designer and part-time teacher of illustration and Design. Cathy has written and illustrated several children’s picture books and produced 2 picture book apps. Cathy was also a part-time specialist primary art teacher.

In recent years Cathy has had more time to concentrate on developing her art and art practice. She has been working on these mixed media works and sculptures for the past few years (2020-present) and is continually adding to these series of works. Cathy's current work is informed and inspired by nature and the natural environment of Lake Macquarie and her travels into the Australian bush and beyond.

Cathy’s current work explores mark making and colour in her still life and landscape paintings. She uses expressive techniques using acrylic paint, collage and stencils. Drawing from life is essential to her practice. Cathy regularly attends a life drawing group and sketches plein air in the landscape. Cathys sculptures use a combination of found materials, clay, resin, and gold leaf. The exploration of materials and mediums largely inform Cathy’s sculpture. She is currently working on several different series of artworks. Cathy’s still life works celebrate the importance of food and its origins. She does this using a touch of surrealism. Her landscape series continues to explore abstraction and colour. Cathy’s landscapes are largely informed by the immediate surroundings of Lake Macquarie.
