Sandy Sanderson - Communica Omnia - orchids

Communia Omnia - That which belongs to all taps into the unseen forces that govern both the physical and metaphysical realms.

It seeks to reveal the often-overlooked but ever-present phenomena shaping our world, such as the Earth’s magnetic field and the mathematical structures that dictate the flow and pattern of existence. These forces, invisible to the naked eye yet crucial to the integrity of the natural world, are central to Sanderson’s exploration of the interdependence between humanity and nature.

Through a unique combination of science, magic, and play, Communia Omnia creates a dynamic space where viewers are not merely spectators but active participants in an unfolding narrative. The artwork is deliberately multi-layered, utilising diverse mediums—film, textiles, animatronics, and organic material—to create a multi-sensory experience. These components work in harmony to symbolise the intricate balance of natural forces and our often overlooked, yet intrinsic, relationship with them.

The collaborative and interactive elements within the artwork are pivotal. Communia Omnia doesn’t just tell a story; it invites the audience to co-create that story. This interactivity mirrors the broader theme of ecological cooperation and reminds viewers that their participation, both in the artwork and in the world, is vital. In blending elements of art, science, and play, the work encourages viewers to not only see but also feel their connection to the natural world, fostering a more profound sense of stewardship and responsibility.

In doing so, the artwork transcends traditional boundaries, becoming a space where art, science, and the natural world converge, offering a hopeful vision of ecological harmony through mutual engagement and understanding.

About the artist

Sandy Sanderson is an experimental, research-based artist. Her practice is process-driven, combining art, science, technology, philosophy, and ritual. Her work explores relationality with nature and its invisible forces, as well as the boundaries between the organic and the synthetic.

As an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on concept, Sanderson draws from a wide range of mediums, including installation, soft sculpture, film, photography, and both new and traditional technologies, to articulate her ideas.

Sanderson's experience with chronic pain has moved her practice to prioritize conceptual depth and collaborative practices. Her works are a homage to the awe and wonder she feels for the Earth and are an acknowledgment that we are always in conversation with the unseen forces that shape our reality.
